William Lindesay in 1987 made what Chinese news services reported
as "the most successful foreign exploration of Great Wall". He recounted
his 2,470 km solo adventure in "Alone on the Great Wall" published
in the UK, USA and Germany. Now drawing from his findings and conservation
thoughts arising from more than 600 days spent on the Great Wall,
he is writing two books for Oxford University Press: "Beijing's
Great Wall: Research and Impressions" and "Images of Asia: The Great
Wall." Lindesay first saw Great Wall on a map when he was 11 years
old, went on to study geography at Liverpool University and now
approaches Great Wall conservation from a geographical perspective,
viewing the structure as more than a building, but a landscape.
He pioneered arousal of press and media attention toward the Wall's
deteriorating environment and was awarded the Friendship Medal from
the Central Chinese Government in 1998. He is founder and director
general of "International Friends of the Great Wall", the conservation-concerned
society. A regular speaker about his experiences, the 45-year-old
has recently presented the lecture "The Great Wall: From Adventure
