Countryside Code

In viewing cosmetic damage ¨C litter and graffiti -- on Great Wall, The Society has identified three main ¡°user¡± groups: keen amateur photographers, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, and day trippers.

A few years ago most panorama points on wild Wall were littered with the orange and green signature film boxes of Kodak and Fuji, amazingly left behind by photographers out to capture the beauty of the Wall, but neglectful of care for it. Their self management has improved a lot. Day trippers remain a major problem, and this user group is especially dangerous during the high ¡°spring travel¡± season when whole groups of employees can inflict serious damage on fragile areas that lack stewardship.

International Friends of the Great Wall as a society wants to spearhead promotion of responsible outdoor behavior among ALL people who visit wilderness sections of Great Wall in particular, and Beijing¡¯s mountain countryside in general.

To this end The Society is co-operating with Black Yak, the world-class outdoor equipment retailer, to jointly promote the campaign ¡°Beijing¡¯s People Love Beijing¡¯s Mountains¡±. The code being promoted is the need to:

£ªTake your own garbage home
£ªDo not cross farmers¡¯ land ¨C keep to paths
£ªDo not shout unless it¡¯s an emergency
£ªDo not smoke or let off fireworks
£ªCarry your belongings in a rucsac to avoid use of plastic bags
£ªDo not damage trees, flowers or plants
£ªIf you need to relieve yourself, cover up your business with soil
£ªIf you have any space in your rucsac, pick up some litter left by others
£ªIntroduce others you meet on the mountains to these guidelines

THE CAMPAIGN¡¯S SLOGAN IS:

¡°KEEPING THE WILDERNESS WILD DEPENDS ON YOU BEING CIVILISED !!¡±

The name of the campaign, its slogan and guidelines will soon feature on labels attached to all Black Yak products sold in China thus exploiting a valuable opportunity to influence the behaviour of the country¡¯s growing number of outdoor enthusiasts.
